Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 11, 2026  ·  Contact: [email protected]

The short version: Course Compass runs entirely in your browser and has no server of its own. It contains no analytics or trackers, and doesn't send anything to Charted Edu Tech automatically or in the background. Everything it stores stays on your device by default, and data only leaves your browser when it goes directly to a service you have configured — your school's Canvas, our AI backend (Campus proxy), our cloud backup (opt-in, paid plans only), Google Drive, or Paddle (billing, only if you subscribe to a paid plan).

The free tier: the free features of Course Compass — assignment prioritization, the treasure hunt, streaks, and the focus timer — run 100% locally, with no account or sign-in required, and collect no data and transmit nothing to Charted Edu Tech or any third party. The AI, account, sync, Google Drive, and payment features described below are optional, opt-in features that are live now for students who choose to sign in and subscribe — they are never activated without your explicit action, and the free tier stays fully local and functional whether or not you use them.

What the extension stores (locally, on your device)

Course Compass stores the following data via chrome.storage.local. None of it is transmitted to Charted Edu Tech automatically or in the background — the one opt-in exception, cloud backup of your notes index on paid plans, is covered separately below:

  • Your Canvas web address and Canvas API access token (required for the extension to read your assignments).
  • Your Campus AI token (optional; only if you enable AI features on a paid plan).
  • Your study notes (typed, uploaded, or imported from Google Drive) and the derived notes index.
  • Saved course syllabi, cached assignment summaries and study plans, and your settings (theme, toggles, preferences).
  • Gameplay state: dubloons, streaks, current treasure-hunt task, and cosmetic unlocks.

Cross-device sync

Cross-device sync is off by default, and the free version syncs nothing — all data stays on the device. On paid plans, signing in with Google lets you opt into syncing a small, non-sensitive subset (your Canvas web address, preferences such as theme and toggles, and gameplay progress such as dubloons and streaks) via chrome.storage.sync to your own Google account, so your other signed-in computers pick it up.

Your Canvas access token is never synced under any circumstances — it stays in local storage on each device — and your notes, uploaded files, and notes index are never synced through Chrome Sync (Google) either. Separately, signed-in paid-plan users can opt into cloud backup, which does transmit your notes index to our own backend for cross-device restore — see §2 "Charted Edu Tech cloud backup" below for what that sends and when.

You can delete all locally stored data at any time by removing the extension or clearing the extension's storage from Chrome settings. That does not reach a copy held in Charted Edu Tech cloud backup, if you've enabled it — to permanently delete that copy, email [email protected] and we'll erase it.

What data is sent, and where

Data is sent only to services you set up, directly from your browser:

1. Your school's Canvas site

The extension reads your assignments, due dates, grades, and page content using a Canvas API access token you provide in Settings. These requests go to your own Canvas domain. No Canvas data is sent anywhere else.

2. Charted Edu Tech Campus AI proxy — only if you use AI features

When you click an AI action (such as notes indexing, quiz generation, or pre-grading), the relevant text — for example a page's content, your notes, or images of PDF pages for OCR — is sent to our AI backend (the Campus proxy, running on Cloudflare Workers). The Campus proxy handles authentication against your plan's credit balance and routes the request to an AI model on your behalf. This is governed by Charted Edu Tech's data handling practices; we do not retain input or output content beyond the request lifecycle. Nothing is sent to the AI backend unless AI is turned on and you click a button.

3. Google Drive — only if you connect it

With your consent (OAuth, read-only drive.readonly scope), the extension lists and downloads the note files you choose, into your browser, to use as study material. No Drive data is sent anywhere else — not to Charted Edu Tech's servers.

4. Charted Edu Tech cloud backup — only if you enable it (signed-in, paid plans)

Cloud backup is a separate, opt-in feature from Chrome Sync (Google), described next. When you click "Back up now" in the Account panel — or automatically, in the background, after a Google Drive import batch completes — the extension sends your notes index (the text chunks derived from your typed and imported notes) to our own backend (the Campus proxy, running on Cloudflare Workers) so "Restore from cloud" can bring it back on another signed-in device. For files imported from Google Drive, only a reference (file name, course, and the Drive link) is sent — never the file's contents; the file itself stays on your Drive. This is governed by Charted Edu Tech's data handling practices, the same as the AI backend described above. Cloud backup is off unless you click "Back up now," or import from Drive with cloud backup previously enabled; it never runs for free-tier users. There's no self-serve delete button for this backup yet — email [email protected] to have it permanently removed from our backend.

5. Chrome Sync (Google) — only if you enable cross-device sync

When on, a small, non-sensitive subset of settings — your Canvas web address, display preferences (theme, AI and Clipper toggles), your chosen Google Drive folder name, and gameplay progress (dubloons, streaks, current task) — is written to chrome.storage.sync, which the Chrome browser syncs through your Google account to your other devices. Your Canvas access token, Campus AI token, notes, and uploaded files are never synced. This is handled by Chrome/Google, not by Charted Edu Tech, and is governed by Google's privacy policy. It is off unless you turn it on.

6. Paddle — only if you subscribe to a paid plan (or just visit the pricing page)

Checkout and billing are handled by Paddle, our merchant of record. The pricing page loads Paddle's checkout script directly from Paddle (cdn.paddle.com), and clicking Buy opens Paddle's secure checkout overlay in your browser. As a standard part of that script, Paddle also loads its own subscription-retention analytics component (branded ProfitWell / Paddle Retain, served from public.profitwell.com) — this runs automatically on the pricing page, not just at checkout, and is outside our control; it is governed by Paddle's privacy policy, not this one. (Self-serve subscription management in your account is on the way; until it ships, email [email protected] to change or cancel a plan.) To link a purchase to your account, your account ID and email are passed to Paddle as part of that checkout; your payment card details go directly to Paddle and never touch our servers.

7. Charted Edu Tech voice backend — only if you use Pro natural-voice narration

The "Read to me" reader can read pages, notes, and imported chapters aloud. By default this uses your browser's own built-in speech synthesis, which never leaves your device. On the Pro plan, you can pick a natural voice instead — when you do, the text being read is sent to our text-to-speech backend (running on Cloudflare Workers) to generate the audio, one sentence at a time. This is a separate, independently-metered feature from AI credits and does not draw from your credit balance. If your voice is set to "Browser" (the default), nothing is sent for narration.

Outside of Paddle's checkout script (section 6, active only on the pricing page), the extension uses no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services, and Charted Edu Tech does not sell or share your data with anyone.

Permissions, and why they are needed

  • storage / unlimitedStorage — save your settings, notes, and cache on your device.
  • scripting + host access to your Canvas domain — display the in-page panel and read coursework on Canvas pages you visit.
  • identity — the Google Drive sign-in flow (only used if you connect Drive).
  • notifications — a desktop notification when a notes-indexing job finishes.
  • alarms — schedule occasional background maintenance tasks.

Sensitive and educational data

Course Compass processes your coursework, which may include educational records. All processing is at your direction and on your device; data is only sent to the services listed above that you configure. We encourage you to review your institution's policies before using AI features on sensitive or graded coursework.

Children's privacy

Course Compass is intended for students at the secondary and post-secondary level. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information through the extension, please contact us at [email protected] so we can address it promptly.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Course Compass after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
